Starfleet Command Gold Review
By Mr. Tea - 6:50 PM on Thursday, August 05, 2000

Introduction

I’ve never been a fan of Star Trek, its Universe, its stories, its TV shows, and its movies, so I figure "why should a Star Trek game be any different?" To tell you the truth, it’s not. I’ve never been too fond of any game based upon the popular sci-fi theme and characters, and I was wondering whether or not Starfleet Command would change my mind. Well, it kind of did, and it kind of didn’t. I’m a bit up in the air about this title, and I’ve given it some decent playing time but I’m still undecided. Let me give you some background on this title and then the reasoning behind my verdict.

Packaging and Set-Up

This came as Starfleet Command: Gold Edition but I don’t give a damn so I’m reviewing it as Starfleet Command: Regular Edition. The box is cute, I guess. It’s mostly white with a gold and black lettering. In the center there is some sort of battle going on. Ships are flying around, blowing things up, and dodging asteroids. Then, inside the foldaway cover and on the back you’re given info about the game and the ships and whatnot. Interesting to a degree, but nothing spectacular.

Now, inside the box is a nice sized manual. It says 164 pages but it sure as hell doesn’t read like that. There is A LOT of info to memorize and master and I highly recommend you read the manual before playing. You’re making a huge mistake if you don’t because you’ll be lost from the get-go. But, if you’re lazy as hell, there is a Quick Reference Card also included in the box that has all the key assignments listed and what exactly each key does. That’s about it. Oh yeah, installation was a breeze by the way.
