Monday Morning Developer - June 27th 2004
Posted Sunday, June 27, 2004 by Mr. GBob

Great Moments in Monday Morning Quarterbacking. The time is the 4th century. The Emperor Valens receives a delegation of Visigoths to the throne. The Visigoths complain of raids committed by the Alans and the Huns. Valens graciously announces that the Visigoths may immigrate into Rome, but they will have to leave their weapons at the border. Within a year he reconsiders this policy and allows the Visigoths arms if they join the Roman armies. The Visigoths agree and then proceeded to sack the Roman nation. If only Valens had listened to the Monday Morning Quarterbacks in the Senate who told him that no good would come of allowing the Visigoths to move. If a Monday Morning Quarterback ever asks are “are you nuts?” you should have an answer ready. Ignore the Monday Morning Quarterbacks at your own peril. With this in mind let us welcome our new Visigoth overlords with open arms in another edition of the Monday Morning Developer!

In this edition we talk about the X-Box 2, Liquid Sky and the passing of another great development house.

Warhammer Online Cancelled
Posted Monday, June 21, 2004 by Mr. Rei

One more generic fantasy MMORPG you'll never play...

Visitors to the Warhammer Online site this morning (all 2 of them) stumbled across this message from the companies general manager, Robert Dews.

"It is with a great deal of sadness that I have to inform the community that we have decided to discontinue the development of Warhammer Online and will be closing down this website with immediate effect.

This has been a difficult and painful decision but it was taken following a following a full review of the progress of the game, costs to date and future costs of the project. As a result both Games Workshop and Climax Development Limited, the computer games developer, have agreed to terminate the development project.

I would like to say a personal thanks to all of the people who have followed our development over the last few years, your constant support and enthusiasm has meant a great deal to us."

Damn shame, really. We didnt even have a chance to play this one in beta and find out that was it was slightly less stylized-looking, ugly, ugly version of World of Warcraft.

A moment of mourning for Warhammer Online...

Oh well! Back to City of Heroes!

The Monday Morning Developer - June 21st Edition
Posted Saturday, June 19, 2004 by Mr. GBob

Great moments in Monday Morning Quarterbacking. The place is ancient Egypt. The Lord did tell Moses to confront the Pharaoh and demand that the Israelites be set free from bondage. “I will make Pharaoh so obstinate” said God “that, despite the many signs and wonders that I will work, he will not listen to you. Therefore I will lay My hand on Egypt.” Moses and Aaron did confront the Pharaoh and as God decreed, their pleas were rejected. As plagues descended upon the land, many Monday Morning Quarterbacks did say unto the Pharaoh “ummm…shouldn’t we just let them go?”. The Pharaoh did not listen to the advice of the Monday Morning Quarterbacks and so God did smite the first-born children of Egypt and then destroyed the Pharaohs army. The lesson? Even if it’s against the will of God himself, always listen to the Monday Morning Quarterback.

In this spirit let us celebrate the Monday Morning Developer in all of us. We may not make games, but we sure can pick on those who do.

In this issue, stolen code, crazed video messages to gamers, a look at old school gaming and some thoughts on MMOGs.

TEN QUESTIONS WITH ANTHONY "SUNSWORD" CASTORO
Posted Thursday, June 17, 2004 by Mr. Ray

We recently had the opportunity to sit down and have a chat with Ultima Online’s Producer, Anthony "SunSword" Castoro. Sunsword was the Lead Designer for Ultima Online a few years back, took a job with SOE to work on the then forthcoming Star Wars Galaxies, and returned back to Ultima Online to take up the reigns as Producer for UO Live back in the latter half of 2002. He’s guided UO through the tumultuous Age of Shadows expansion, and is now overseeing the forthcoming Seventh Anniversary box and the Asian-themed expansion.

STRIKE ME DOWN, AND I WILL GET MORE EXP DEBT THAN YOU COULD EVER IMAGINE
Posted Monday, June 14, 2004 by Mr. StackedMidgets

Ah, the joys of the new Jedi system. The SWG dev team have come out of their holes been hard at work trying to make their new system which includes a spanking new Test Center server, a cross-server character transfer system, a player consider system, a PvP ranking system for Jedi, new Jedi enclave areas, a completely new Jedi skill system, the “Knight trials”, a new death penalty system and a modified lightsaber crafting system. It’s a pretty impressive feat for a team that has left a number of professions totally broken, the equivalents of GM Forensicians or Spirit Speakers in UO. Although I haven’t actually seen the changes for myself – I never had the patience or desire to macro Dancer or Droid Engineer – I think I have a pretty good idea as to what the changes are and what the effects of it are going to be.

Monday Morning Developer- The Drugged Edition
Posted Sunday, June 13, 2004 by Mr. GBob

Great moments in Monday Morning Quarterbacking. The year is 2004. The place? Buffalo, New York. The wife of the Monday Morning Developer is telling him that their son is sick. “He’s been cranky and he has a rash” she says. The Monday Morning Developer scoffs at this. After all, what is at the heart of Monday Morning Developing? It’s knowing better than the so called “experts.” “Nonsense” we said. “He’s just tired and worn out”. We then proceeded to share our iced tea with the boy. Now the son has a fever and chills and the MMD is pumped up so full of cold medication that he may not finish this article. All hail the Monday Morning Quarterbacks. We know better than anyone else, even when we’re dead wrong.

This week it's Jawas, Sports and much more stuff that I can't recall since I'm buzzed from mixing cold medication.

Because We All Know You *REALLY* Play UO To Watch Intro Movies...
Posted Wednesday, June 9, 2004 by Somebob

Greatest. Update. EVER!

Yes, that's right. The shell of a company formally known as OSI discovered that players were, horror of horrors, deleting the incredibly stupid and really fucking annoying EA and OSI intro movies so they wouldn't have to suffer through them every time they logged in. In the always-insane world of EA, this became immediately an "exploit" that was, apparently, ""abused"" immediately.

As to whether the patch actually did anything: What the fuck are you smoking? This is UO. A deleted movie will still not play if it doesn't exist, so the only presumed change this will make is disabling the far-less-used technique of hitting enter twice to cut those videos short. Um.. yay.

Discuss: Is it even possible to get more pointless than this? YOU DECIDE!

Monday Morning Developer- June 7th
Posted Sunday, June 6, 2004 by Mr. GBob

Great moments in Monday Morning Quarterbacking. The year is 1530. Spanish officials are distressed over the fact that nobody has found the fabled seven cities of gold in the new world. As armchair explorers, they knew damn well that the golden cities really did exist, and chose to ignore reports from those who were actually there. They dispatched Francisco Coronado to launch an expedition with 300 men. The Monday Morning Quarterbacks in Spain were wrong of course, but Coronado’s doomed mission would help map the continent of North America. Even when the Monday Morning Quarterback is wrong, he is still always right. We honor those who think they know better than the experts in another installment of the Monday Morning Developer.

This week we have children shooting guns, EA buy out rumors and yet another game that let us down. Why do you bastards keep doing it to us?
