To Caroline "Oxenfree" Rea,

We miss you.
How does that old saying go? "You don't know what you got 'til it's gone." It's wrong. We knew. We knew that you were one of the most decent human beings any of us knew. We knew that you were always there for us, and always prepared to be a friend even when your own problems needed attention. An eloquent man said today that "Few people can walk into a room with filled with assholes and make friends out of each and every one of em." He was right. Oxenfree embodied everything that is right in the world. Each of us knew that she would be there in whatever way she could anytime we needed her. More than a few of us took her up on that over the last few years, and we are better people because of it. Caroline always had a kind word or a helpful suggestion to the myriad of personal problems voiced in our little channel. She listened intently to our issues, always taking us serious. She was, as they say, good people. It's always tragic when a young person is taken in the prime of their youth, but it really hits home for us in this case. We know how hard she worked to get back into school, and how hard she worked towards finishing it. It's so unjust that she'll never recieve her college degree.
I cried today. Cried for the first time in a long time. Even those of us who didn't shed physical tears were crying on the inside today. Oxenfree was one of us. Today, we're one less of a whole because of this loss. #hate has always been a den of assholish bastards, but you made us better people. Everyone she knew was better for knowing her, and we wish to God that people will say the same thing about us when we pass on.
Not all of us believe in a God, but those of us who do are praying for you. We pray that your soul will find peace and that you've made your way to a better place, one where pain and suffering don't exist.
We love you, Caroline. You were our friend, and we miss your sorely. We will always remember you for your humor, your wit, your advise, and, most of all, your friendship.

Love,
#hate

EA Challenges Labor Laws, Deserves to Lose
Posted Thursday, November 11, 2004 by Mr. Rasputin

There's an article making its rounds today. It's been on Slashdot amongst other places. Jiffy suggested throwing it up on the main page, and as it's under Creative Commons, I'm throwing it in its entirety up on the main page. Take it away, ea_spouse.

Better Marketing Than The Fragdolls

Posted by Psychochild in our forums, and gloriously reposted here, well, because it's news and what not, and also for the children.

(Must be nice, no flaming. Must be nice, no flaming.)

*sigh* Okay, I'm okay.

Most of you know me as the developer of Meridian 59. I often lurk, sometimes post, and on occasion have to call people names. It's not my fault, they asked for it!

Er, anyway, so we're offering a free trial of Meridian 59. It's a special server we've set up to show off some of the changes we've made recently. These include the new rendering engine, mouselook, rebindable keys, and lots of new content. We're pretty proud of the changes we've made, and want to show them off to other people.

You can find out more information and sign up for a free trial account at http://www.meridian59.com/M59-Trial-Signup.php

Anyway, I harp a lot on indie game development, and here's a chance to see what I work on with no risk. Let's face it, those other games out there are going to suck once the shiny wears off and you're left with an imbalanced level-dominated treadmill. Well, M59 already has the shiny worn off of it, so you'll be able to focus on the game itself. Miss the old days when you didn't have to catass up to max level to PvP? Remember the days of open PvP and fighting with other people? Remember when player skill meant something? No? Now's your chance to see what it was like.

I'll probably be hanging around in the trial server on occasion, so come by and harass me if nothing else.

I WUV YOU PSYCHOCHILD.

also, I may just give this a whirl, what with EQ2 basically saying they know their game is broken, but god-damn it they're shipping anyhow (see below)

In Case There Was Any Doubt
Posted Tuesday, November 2, 2004 by Mr. Galt

From the patch notes of 11/1/2004:

Note: Due to some quest-related issues, artisans above level 6 will no longer be automatically granted citizenship. For now they will have to complete the adventurer's path toward citizenship. We apologize to artisans, and plan to revisit the situation after launch.

I'm glad they're making sure everything is running solid.

Please join the discussion currently in session
