Sure. No rootkit. And yes, was too quick on that bandwagon elsewhere, briefly - misunderstood what it was doing.

Equally, the fact SecureROM's set to ultra-paranoid and would require me (among other things) to turn off my AV while connected to the internet to register (yea, right) is a big issue. A less paranoid SecureROM setting, as for example NWN2 uses, dosn't do this.

And the 5 machine, 5 installs* per? Ahaha.

(*If you have 2 users on a machine, and they both activate it, that's 2 "machines". And 2 "installs". And if you uninstall, you only get one machine back. Oops!)

It's not a rootkit, it's just extremely offensive DRM.

Extremely offensive?

Perhaps in your world.

So, what does this mean to me, the guy who uses Steam to install Bioshock?

And I specifically said it's "still onerous DRM."

Steam has SecuROM too, so you're limited to the same 5 installs as everyone else is.

Is it in the fine print anywhere that I need securom? I'm too much of a lazy consumer whore to check anything I agree to.

See, I would never buy something that stopped me from installing it after a few times.

DRM is going way too far these days. I get the importance, but I just don't think it is going to work because no matter what type of DRM comes out, some hacker is going to break it.

It's not that you NEED it. It's that the game installs it by default and you have no choice in the matter.

To be fair, Bioshock is installing what is identified by a rootkit detector as a rootkit. You just have to know that the detector is misidentifying what it sees.

SecuROM also installs a context-menu handler (cmdlineext.dll) to explorer.exe, which is another technique for malware to hide itself. And it doesn't seem to come with an uninstaller. And it snoops around for Process Explorer files.

Until there's a complete analysis of what SecuROM does, I wouldn't make a call either way.

That's because you called them all idiots and disabled registration for half the world's population. Both excellent moves, incidentally.

I consider it a strategic victory.

I read it, and don't know anything about it other than what you wrote.

Yea, that might make it mal/spyware. Not quite the same thing as a rootkit.

What do I do if I don't uninstall the program? I never uninstall games, the only time I have to reinstall a game is when I can't access windows and I have to reformat my pc. so if I do this 5 times, can I not play bioshock anymore?

Rootkits are nothing. It's the stuff they're hiding that you need to worry about. SecuROM is doing a damn fine job in that department.

That's right.

tkinnun0, stop and think about what you posted there a moment.

Lets access where the real damage has been done here.

Thank you.
