Oh no, not me. It's only by the failures of others that my own mediocrity seems acceptable.

Pop...Pop!

Quote:
As described earlier there was a `progressive` startup to the test that would only allow a particular number of connections to both the update server and the game server itself. While initial frustrations where high we soon realized that the server's were showing good vitals and thus more connections were added. At the time the tests for today were finished we had raised the connections to the servers from 40 to 120 on the update servers and from initiall 100 to 1000 on the game servers. There were plans to continue updating the total amounts from there forward until the full playerbase was able to connect.

This is regarding their stress test.

I admit being one of the fools who has rode this POS all the way to the ground on a free ticket.

Describing the game as mediocre would be the supreme compliment. Whilethe current version does have the nicest landscape graphics I have ever seen in a game, that is it's only good feature. Gameplay, performance and server stability are the absolute worst I have ever experienced. Free was a high price for this one.

The bar for launch day hi-jinxs has been set incredibly low, but dare I hope that the ditch can be dug a little deeper? Could this turn out to be the worst launch of all time?

Edit: This was pretty funny. A Community Rep was caught trying to pass off altered screens as actual screen shots (at the bottom of the thread, warning link is image intensive).

Their credit system intrigues me - if I could play WoW for less if I never went to any battlegrounds or some dungeons, that would be nice.

But since it you probably need to "unlock" items etc. per character - screw that.

As for "final game will have less in it than we dreamt about on the website", well that's rather common. Personally I didn't see any of Anarchy Online's underwater cities (referenced in a preview I lost the link to), and its clan/omni "war" was pathetic even after Notum Wars. Rubies of Eventide had a hundred professions a tiny fraction of which were actually implemented. And the less said about "you can play a mighty dragon" Horizons the better.

They have trouble keeping 1000 connections on a server. In a PVP-intensive, nation-fighting type of game. Are you trying to tell me that doesn't spell absolute disaster?

That may have consequences beyond D&L. It will be the first released game using the licensed BigWorld server technology that has been pimped since 1999.

Remember? BigWorld: Citizen Zero was going to be a PC MMOG from Micro Forte. It never materialised, but they started a spin-off company to license BigWorld technology. Stargate Worlds is their other western licensee. Citizen Zero was re-announced as an Xbox game in 2002, then disappeared again. Then it was re-re-announced in 2004 as PC and Xbox, but still hasn't appeared despite website info updates.

Most bizarrely of all, an official Citizen Zero forum community has been going since 1999, without ever getting a game. Ultimate fanbois? The Micro Forte website is also entertaining:

Quote:
Micro Forté have dedicated the last few years to focusing on building the BigWorld Technology platform for MMOG game development. Micro Forté have successfully completed this technology and spun it out as a separate middleware company named BigWorld Pty Ltd.

Not many game studios have done this sort of thing before, however, we felt that our unique focus and combined experiences would allow us to successfully develop this cutting edge technology, and in doing so, create a new group of people focused on an area we identified as needing attention - namely highly scalable and well integrated MMOG middleware.

i.e. they have released nothing for years, and all they have to show for it is Dark & Light's servers. And they're still claiming to have their own MMOGs in the works.

Ass gliders, and flying in general, was probably the best part of settlers. I also liked the snowboards and the fast-paced leveling. I would've liked building your own fort, but there were few too many pieces (wooden wall, a torch, and 5 types of single-pillar tower), besides the total lack of point to a fort. It felt more like making a fort out of furniture, which is fun in its own right but doesn't do well in a game like that.

I probably would've dicked around longer if they didn't have so many crashes and server stability issues.

Put the popcorn in the warmer, a few minutes before the announced start time they delayed it again. Now it's June 5th. This is the 3rd or 4th delay in the last 2 months, and the 6th or 7th overall now, if memory serves. It's only 2 and a half or three years past the original launch date, but I am sure it should be out sometime this decade.

Irony Meter: Set To 11!

So, does this mean that we can't talk about SOE's products while subscribed to D&L?
