It's actually two separate sources, through two separate people.

I'm sure there's some logic in this somewhere, but I'm not seeing it.

Wasn't working on MxO already far enough into Hell that dropping another level or two to work for Sony doesn't really matter anymore?

I'm guessing they'll put it on the Station pass, thus giving another option for subscribers that's not catass fantasy or Sim-Beru.

I imagine that Sony realizes that, the anomaly of Blizzard notwithstanding, NCSoft is their main competitor, and NC has a much more diverse lineup than Sony does. This helps close that gap somewhat without waiting 2-3 years for another product.

Hard to tell without knowing the financial details, but I'd guess that at worst this will be a wash for Sony, and could work out nicely for them. MXO isn't pulling WoW style numbers, but it's no AC2, either.

So is Turbine going to put together some kind of combo subscription since they're going to be publishing their own games and look to have a lot going on at once, squaring off against SOE and NCSoft?

Has anyone tossed around the idea of a unified chat system between station pass games? The people who play multiple games are going to have friends in each of those games and seems to me it'd make sense if it was technically feasible.

Actually, Sony is "sort of" already offering that. If you play EQ, EQ2, or SWG (may be more, not sure) you can give your friends a tell across those games. I can't remember the exact method, but it's something along the lines of name.server@game or something.

I haven't used it yet, but it's certainly an excellent feature for those of us who play multiple games.

Also, I'd be curious to see how this would play out, as the Matrix is a Warner Bros. property, and Sony is their competition. I could see Monolith leaving the industry, I just find it odd that they and the Wachowski brothers would see the game to WB's direct competition.

I bet they view it as a Video game license that didn't pan out and want to cash out for a few bucks so they can snort lines with 100 dollar bills.

It makes sense in that they figured out that they don't know how to sell a MMOG, but want to make money off of the Matrix franchise. So, sell the game to a company that does well at selling MMOG's but retain the franchise. SOE will pay WB royalties and subs will increase. (In theory.)

If the game goes big, WB makes more money for no effort and the Matrix franchise increases in popularity leading to more development of toys, movies, etc. If it flops....not their problem anymore.

Maybe Sega decided the MMO genre is not for them? MxO is IMHO much better now than the horror stories about the end of beta indicated, and they patch regularly.

But Sony? The game is somewhat different from their usual fare, to put it mildly. Mission-driven gameplay in a world which has more in common with CoH than anything else... I would not have minded it ending up with NCSoft, but they already have the real CoH. :)

Man I hate modifying my footnotes. Like it now says, four people independantly confirmed it and there'll be an official press release today or tomorrow.

Anyone actually play MxO regularly? I tried it for a bit in beta and was rather unimpressed. I dunno what sony will do with it. I would go with a combination of the WB theory and the competing with NCSoft theory for the "why".

Hello. I play MxO regularly. Just thought I'd put my two sense in here. I think this selling to SOE is a bad move on Monolith's part. After breifly disscussing it with people of my faction(guild) and people of my website, most of us will probably leave if this does go down. To put it bluntly, the only thing that was keeping this game alive was the community, and and the live events. With the Live Events team being ousted, and being sold to SOE (since a lot of the reason most of us are playing MxO is because SWG and EQ suck) a lot of the community might end up leaving. And then SOE will bear witness to another MMO gone down the drain. I am actually part of an internet radio station dedicated to MxO, and we try to keep the community as alive as we can get it. I honestly hope SOE does not make this go the way of SWG.
